Even if you add the growth boosting thingy, it will take decades for the forest to spread. It would also take a hell of a long time for the developers to add trees everywhere...and then it would take away the atmosphere of the game. It will not. Nothing will be affected except which reward you get. I suggest killing Harold personally, you get a permanent boost to your damage resistance instead of a weapon, plus you still get the yew charm.
