I don’t know much about Cancun, but I should warn you about something. I knew people who went to Cancun for a couple of weeks, and they think the hotel they stayed in was owned by the Mafia, because even though they were in Mexico, the place was almost entirely run by Italians. About a month after they had returned to Canada, there was a homicide in the same hotel they had been in. So do be careful.
The Oasis is a wonderful hotel, but it really depends on what you are looking to do at the hotel. If you like laying out on the beach, only to tan, then this a great resort. However, if you like doing things in the Ocean, this isn’t the hotel for you. The waves can get huge, and the water isn’t clear enough to see much if you like to snorkel right at your resort. Also, during our three day stay, the food was great, but we were only able to eat at two restaraunts, as that was all that they could fit us into.
This hotel is rated number 62 of 181 hotels in Cancun, and has an average of 3/5 star rating.
Yes, Xel Ha is about an hour and a half south of Cancun. It is at the southernmost part of Playa Del Carmen. However, it is competely worth the trip, and something you must do when you go.
Hope this helps
On the Trip Advisor site, the Oasis Palm Beach come in at number 62 of the 181 Cancun hotels. Click the link below to see the other ratings. Xel-ha is about two and a half hours south of Cancun. When you get to your hotel sign up for the tour which will take you to the Tulum ruins and Xel-ha in the same day (they’re close together).
